Teaching

Winter Semester’s Portrait Drawing Class begins at LAAFA! I’m so excited about the new beginning of our Monday night drawing class at LAAFA. Our 12 students bring their good energy and dedication to the serious work of creating portraiture. We are working from both life and photo reference and will be creating full value portraits in charcoal from a prolonged 5 week pose.  Right now I’m sharing with them some of my preliminary sketches and studies to explain how my process begins and evolves into a finished piece. This last week everyone practiced the charcoal shading technique necessary for creating a full tonal range in black and white.  Check back for more updates on our progress!

To watch for:

The Artist’s Magazine feature article in June

I’ve been a long time fan of the Artist’s Magazine and how well they present their artist’s techniques and materials. It’s a wealth of information on representational art procedures, with each magazine issue focusing on several artist’s work as well as monthly columns written by top artists in the field covering a wide variety of studio knowledge. They are also online at www.artistsnetwork.com/to share exclusive content with step-by-step procedures, video demos and technical forums.  I’m very excited to be working with them and sharing with you my painting techniques and artistic approach in a very accessible format.

The Portrait Society’s 6 x 9 sale at the Portrait Society Conference in Atlanta in April

This is one of the best art deals of the year. If you are going to be in Atlanta around this time, I would definitely suggest taking a day or two and attending the Portrait Society conference. Many of today’s top portrait oriented fine art professionals are there either presenting or supporting this annual gathering. It is a chance to meet and learn in a very personal and informal way from some of the most talented people in the field. Additionally you will have an opportunity to purchase a 6 x 9 inch painting from over 100 top name artists for only $250!!! I will be contributing a painting myself, so keep an eye out.  What a steal.

Upcoming work from fellow artists at the Kate Sammons Studio

There are a couple of beautiful pieces that are in the final stages of finishing on the easels.  I can’t believe how amazing they are! Check back soon to view these exquisite drawings before they go off to exhibition.

Other news:

My recent apprenticeship at the TWS Studio in PA is now transformed into a bigger and grander enteriprise, the Ani Art Academy Waichulis. The new facilities and face of this esteemed and 12 year old establishment are now relocated onto 6 acres of private grounds in a brand new architecturally designed space. They have just resumed full time instruction and shared pictures of the new work environment. Absolutely amazing! I salute and congratulate them for this incredible achievement and am just dying to come back for a visit!
